R.A.Aliev's first important work was his PhD dissertation on the theory and practice of invariant control systems. He found out the invariance conditions for MIMO feed-forward feedback deterministic, stochastic, and fuzzy control systems. He suggested the methods for synthesis of a stochastic and fuzzy feed-forward feedback variable structure systems.
In the late 60-ies R.A. Aliev suggested an idea of integration of decision and control processes in intelligent manufacturing systems. That idea had laid a basis for creation of computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) systems for continuous complex plants. New methods and coordination algorithms have been suggested for multi-level hybrid systems described by linear and non-linear stochastic and fuzzy models. A wide class of algorithms has been developed on the basis of the notion of "coordinating function" first introduced by him.
Methods to represent and process fuzzy knowledge in the framework of expert systems have been developed. Expert System shell ESPLAN for generating applied expert systems has been implemented in accordance with the developed methodology.
R.A.Aliev was an innovator in the new scientific direction connected with the creation of industrial intelligent robots operating in fuzzy environment.
R.A.Aliev with A.Tsercovny has suggested three fuzzy implications (ALI-1, ALI-2, ALI-3) that satisfy the necessary criteria of human reasoning. Appropriate theorems were formulated and proved. Russian researchers have experimentally proved in 1996 the high effect of this fuzzy logic as compared with other known logics.
R.A.Aliev has formulated and proved theorems that allow defining conditions for adequacy of fuzzy models.
Methods for synthesis of fuzzy intelligent control systems have been developed. The suggested methods embrace different classes of control systems including multi-dimensional and adaptive predictive systems for non-linear and unknown objects.
A concept and a method to create a fuzzy distributed intelligent system have been suggested as well by R.A.Aliev. In cooperation with B.Fazlollahi, R.Vahidov, and R.R. Aliev he suggested a new alternative approach to the existing - Multi-Agent Distributed Intelligent Systems with Competition and Cooperation among Agents.
R.A.Aliev's recent researches are closely related with Soft Computing technology. A new genetic algorithm with group principle and directed mutation has been suggested. He has suggested a new learning theory based on Evolutionary algorithms to treat fuzzy neural networks with fuzzy inputs, outputs, and weight coefficients. A new concept of fuzzy regression analysis based on genetic algorithms has been developed. A new fuzzy time series forecasting method based on recurrent neural network is proposed.
Generalized theory of stability (GTS) for analysis of complex dynamical systems described by fuzzy differential equations was introduced and developed. Different PNL based definitions (Zadeh-Aliev, Zadeh-Aliev-Pedrycz definitions) of stability of dynamical systems were intraduced.
Criteria concerning generalized stability for a wide class of continuous dynamical systems was established, 2005-2007.
Considerable part of researches of R.A.Aliev is related with application his theoretical achievements to real - world problems. The ESPLAN expert system shell has been put into practical exploitation in oil-refinery, petro-chemical industrial branches, and well-drilling processes, in medicine, conflictology, education and other scopes. The achievements of the researches on invariant systems, CIM Systems, Fuzzy Logic and Soft Computing have been applied in robotics, optimization, control, and diagnosis of technological processes.
Some results concerning fuzzy logic, soft computing, intelligent robots, fuzzy control systems, neuro-fuzzy systems, and distributed intelligent systems have been included in the syllabuses to advance specialists at the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy (Baku), at Tabriz University (Iran), at University of Siegen (Germany), at Georgia State University (USA) and at other places.
